Broken

Today was a day of extremes. We began by seeing the devastation and destruction of Hurricane Katrina – the things that still haven’t been cleaned up. We then experienced and saw perhaps the most beautiful and precious thing we might ever experience.

In fact, all of us were broken at some point today. Some words from the team…

Hump day? Is our trip almost done?!? I’m not ready for it to come to an end!

Today was a day of contrasts. We all came on this trip to work, but it there was no work done! Instead, we drove over to New Orleans. We began in St. Bernard Parish and felt as thought we were driving through a war zone or a movie set. We saw a neighborhood that was a total ghost town.

After spending time there and in the ninth ward, we drove through the city and saw all the beautiful, ornate homes. It is so weird to think that while there is still so much devastation that is being overlooked, many people are going about their lives in the “beautiful” parts of the city.

From there we drove back to Mississippi to attend church where we had done work. It was a service like no other I have experienced. Not only was it a black church in the worst part of the city, it is being led by a man who should not even be alive. His testimony was amazing and we were moved to tears. And after the service, the love that flowed from the congregation was overwhelming.

I believe God showed me today that no matter how bad you think your life is, it really isn’t. Life is a gift… don’t be afraid to give it away.

I cannot describe in a few paragraphs the experience we all had today. To anyone reading this, please ask me about it sometime. I would love to share it with you! I will tell you this: God is bigger than anything and anyone! Oh, and it’s okay to dance in church!

Biloxi - Wed 099Words can’t even explain the righteousness that was displayed tonight at this tiny, soulful church we visited. After attending their Wednesday night service, my heart will forever be changed! To experience the passion and sincere faith they have for God, even after everything they been through as a congregation (just ask one of us when we get back about the details) astounds me. I’m just so thankful for this opportunity and I wish EVERYONE could experience half of what we have these past couple of days. Praise God and give Him ALL the glory!

There is not enough space here to share with you the experiences we shared today. So I will try to paint a picture in a short amount of space. I encourage all of you ready these to ask one of us when we get back to share what has happened this week.

Our day ran the gamut of emotions from start to finish. We started off the day with heavy hearts for the loss and devastation of one city. We finished at a church service with probably one of the most encouraging and uplifting God experiences ever (Miracles Do Happen). Then we ended our day together with fellowship and prayer as a group. God is Good!!!!

Thank you for all your prayers for us while we are down. I encourage you again to get with one of us so we can share in more detail the experiences we have had on this trip.

The consensus is, we simply can’t explain what we experienced today in a blog. So PLEASE grab one of us and ask! We would love to share with you.

We’ll continue with the work projects at Papa John’s and Barbara’s houses tomorrow, so be sure to check back for pictures and updates. Until then, please keep us in your prayers – that we would allow Him to continue molding our hearts and making us more like Him.

I can imagine the devastation that you saw in New Orleans as I have relatives who live there and have also seen the ninth ward myself. It is unbelievable the way the city still looks after all this time but also it is amazing how God is continuing to use this devastation to pull people together from all over the world. God is truly at work in the lives of all the volunteers who are reaching out to help their neighbor in need. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with each of you as you go about God’s business.
