Katrina '09

About the Team

Our Trip’s Focus

On August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the southern coast of the United States. It was reported that more than 1,800 people lost their lives, and more than $81 billion in damages occurred.

In Biloxi alone, there were 25,000 homes destroyed in one day. The biggest home building boom ever in Biloxi for 1 year was roughly 1500 homes. If you do the calculations, that is close to 16 years to rebuild what was lost in 1 day! There are some homes that will never be rebuilt, and many that still need our help.

About New Life Disaster Relief

That’s why we’re teaming up with Ken and Dawn Wetzel. They and their children experienced Katrina’s devastating effects and chose to remain in the area to help rebuild, founding New Life Disaster Relief. Every week, different teams of volunteers come in to assist in the rebuilding effort throughout the Biloxi area.

New Life Disaster Relief is sponsored by Biloxi Christian Church. Both are located at 14800 Big Ridge Rd, Biloxi, MS 39532.

New Life’s mailing address is PO Box 4735, Biloxi, MS 39535.

Where’s Biloxi, Mississippi?

  • See MAP.  You can use the zoom in and zoom out features to view the area.
  • Use GoogleEarth to “travel” on over to Biloxi. We’ll be driving, though, so it will take us a little longer. :)
